신천지와 KKK 닮은 점(8) 흰무리

(1) 흰무리 신천지

시정의 현자들이 “선거와 코로나바이러스의 최대 수혜자는 신천지”라는 말들을 많이 한다. 선거 때문에 신천지가 묻히고, 코로나 때문에 신천지가 잊혀지고 있다는 것이다. 그럴 수야 없지. 누구 좋으라고. 그런 의미에서 오랜만에 ‘신천지와 KKK 닮은 점’을 써봐야겠다.

신천지 교리의 핵심어 중 하나는 흰무리다. 구원을 받아야 흰무리에 속하게 되고 하나님의 나라로 들어갈 수 있다는 주장이다. (이만희의 최애색이 흰색이라는 얘기도 있다.)

‘흰무리 교리’는 ‘공포감 조성’에 아주 효과적이다. 흰무리에 들지 못 하면 하나님의 나라로 들어갈 수 없다니! 얼마나 무섭냔 말이다. 아유, 무서워라.

(2) 흰무리 KKK

흰가운과 흰두건은 KKK의 상징이다. ‘검은’ 흑인들을 증오하고 배척하는 ‘백색’ 테러 패션이다. 근데 이 패션이 자리잡기까지는 시간이 걸렸다.

KKK가 처음부터 백의(白衣)의 양아치는 아니었다. 몸뚱아리에 아무 누더기나 걸치고 대가리에 두건만 뒤집어 쓰면 그걸로 끝이었다. 밀가루 포대나 베갯잇을 뜯어 뒤집어 쓰고 나오는 놈들도 있었다니 말 다했다. 심지어 흑인 코스프레를 하는 놈들도 있었다.

이런 무개념 별꼴패션이 흰가운과 흰두건으로 정리되기 시작한 건 이른바 ‘제2기 KKK 시기’(1915~1944년) 들어서다. 이 시기에 흰가운과 흰두건이 KKK의 ‘정체성과 신념, 동일성과 소속감’을 드러낸다는 관념이 넓게 퍼졌다.

근데 이런 어쩌구저쩌구는 지들끼리 멋부려 하는 얘기다. 사실 백인 양아치들이 흰가운과 흰두건 패션을 택한 이유는 ‘공포감 조성’에 효과적이기 때문이었다. 아유, 무서워라!

흰무리 KKK

흰색은 KKK의 상징. The white hood and robe is just the most popular of a variety of costumes used by the hate group. The hood remains a part of the group as does the hate, to this day.
 

흰색으로 동질성과 정체성 확인

흰가운과 흰두건은 얼굴 숨기려는 변장 패션이기도 하다. The costume was less a disguise and more of an in-group identifier. The uniform hood and white robes served as a symbol that gave the hate group "a sense of power and belonging, as well as a quick way of identifying others who share[d] their beliefs."

But members of the terrorist organization donned very different costumes for much of the group’s early history. While the white robes—which were later mythologized by Klan members as depictions of Confederate ghosts—did show up in early costumes, it was initially more common for members to don costumes that came from a wide variety of folk traditions and pageants. Some Klansmen wore pointed hats suggestive of wizards, dunces, or Pierrots; some wore everyday winter hoods, pillowcases, or flour sacks on their heads. Many early Klansman also wore blackface, simultaneously scapegoating and mocking their victims.
